Empowering the Next Generation
Article by: Bob and Mona Davies, Co-founders

Marina Preciado is a young woman who has defied the odds. The Wildomar resident spent 11 years in foster care. She has struggled to stay afloat academically while trying to overcome many emotional struggles as a child without parents.

In 2008, Community Outreach Ministry sent the 20-year-old to summer camp on a scholarship where she learned she was loved and accepted. Today, Marina is a first generation college graduate. She works to support herself and shows every sign of a young adult with the potential for a bright future. Marina is reaching back and is empowering the next generation to overcome similar obstacles she faced as a foster child. She is committed to helping Aubrey Moore, a first grade student at Wildomar Elementary learn how to read.

Bob and Mona Davies, co-founders of Community Outreach Ministry matched Marina and Aubrey together and they make a great fit. When Marina heard about the seven-year-old's reading struggles she implemented a unique learning plan to teach a first grader how to read. Marina said, “A child should be taught how to read, grow and succeed in school and that is just what I am going to do. I am going to teach Aubrey to read, grow and to succeed in school no matter what."

Aubrey is being raised by her great-grandparents. Her great-grandmother said that Aubrey earned a perfect score on a recent spelling test thanks to the tutoring assistance she received from Marina. Aubrey's tutor is teaching her to sound out words and write complete sentences. Marina also makes it a point to send her home with books to read such as Space Journey, Chug the Tractor and Phonics Library.

Cheryl Martinez, Aubrey’s great-grandmother said Aubrey read her the entire book, Space Journey. "This was something Aubrey was not able to do before being tutored. Aubrey looks forward to being with Marina who is also mentoring her to develop social and life skills."
